How Mulch Calculation Works

The calculator multiplies your area dimensions by the depth (converted to feet) to get total cubic feet, then converts to cubic yards. Mulch is sold either in bulk (by the cubic yard) or in bags (typically 2 cubic feet each). Bulk is cheaper for larger areas — a cubic yard covers about 162 square feet at 2 inches deep, or 108 square feet at 3 inches deep.

Formula

Volume (cubic feet) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12. Divide by 27 for cubic yards. A standard bag of mulch is 2 cubic feet.

How deep should mulch be?
2–3 inches is the standard depth for most garden beds and around trees. For heavy weed suppression, go up to 4 inches. Avoid piling mulch deeper than 4 inches as it can prevent water from reaching plant roots and cause root rot.
How much area does a yard of mulch cover?
One cubic yard of mulch covers approximately 162 sq ft at 2 inches deep, 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep, or 81 sq ft at 4 inches deep.
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
A cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Standard bags are 2 cubic feet, so you need about 13.5 bags (round up to 14) to equal one cubic yard.
Is bulk or bagged mulch cheaper?
Bulk mulch is almost always cheaper per yard, typically $25–$50 per cubic yard delivered. Bagged mulch at $3–$5 per 2 cu ft bag works out to $40–$67 per cubic yard. Bulk makes sense for anything over 2–3 cubic yards.
